Scales on the map and ahead of you

Weigh stations and truck scales each have their own tile on the map's home sheet, and the layers button lets you show or hide them with the other place types. Weigh stations come from OpenStreetMap. Truck scales include CAT scale locations, taken from the company's own published location list.

Once you start navigating, "what's ahead" shows the next scale on your route along with the next truck stop and rest area. When you're parked, you can open a scale's place sheet to check its hours and your last report.

Hours up front

Every scale shows its posted hours, or says Hours unknown, at the top of its place sheet. OpenStreetMap has hours for only a handful of US scales, so most start as Hours unknown. Fort Route says so plainly instead of guessing.

If you know a scale's schedule, add it with the hours editor on the place sheet. Fort Route then shows whether that scale is usually open or usually closed right now. Fort Route doesn't copy hours from other map services, because their terms forbid storing that data, so the hours come from posted data and from you.

Open and closed reports

When you pass a scale, report it open or closed. A scale report expires after 1 hour, because a scale can open or close at any time and an old report is worse than none. Parking reports, by comparison, last 12 hours.

During the beta, reports are stored on your phone and aren't shared with other drivers yet. Sharing reports between drivers is planned.

Honest limits

Weigh station data in OpenStreetMap is incomplete, and unnamed roadside scales are treated as weigh stations. "Usually open" and "usually closed" describe a typical schedule, not what the sign says today. Fort Route has no live feed of station status, so always follow the signs at the scale and pull in when they tell you to.

To understand what happens at the scale, read weigh stations explained. For places to stop after the scale, see truck stops and parking, and for the turn-by-turn side of the trip, see navigation.

Frequently asked questions

Does Fort Route show whether a weigh station is open right now?

Fort Route shows whether a scale is usually open or usually closed at this hour, based on its posted hours or hours you've entered. It has no live feed of station status. Your own open or closed report shows for 1 hour, and the signs at the scale always come first.

Why does a scale say Hours unknown?

A scale shows Hours unknown when no posted hours are on record for it. OpenStreetMap lists hours for only a handful of US scales. You can add the hours with the editor on the scale's place sheet.

How long do scale reports last?

Open and closed reports on a scale expire after 1 hour. Parking reports last 12 hours. During the beta, both kinds of report stay on your phone.

Are CAT scales included?

Yes, CAT scale locations are on the map under Truck scales, next to Weigh stations. They come from the company's own published location list.
